Motor Fleet Risk Management
Roadsense is a market leading risk management tool kit, developed by Norwich Union for companies that operate a fleet of vehicles. Risk management will deliver clear savings and benefits for companies irrespective of whether they operate a fleet of large goods vehicles a mobile service/support team using light vans, salesmen in company cars, in fact any employee who may be required to drive on company business including use of privately owned cars for work purposes.
There are direct savings from reductions in accidental damage incidents and the possibility of personal injury following a road traffic crash. There are many practical and simple approaches that will directly impact risk and help to reduce both the frequency and costs of incidents which can be attributed to driver carelessness or neglect. For example:
- Licence Checking: This ensures that drivers are properly licensed to drive the category of vehicle required and will identify drivers with poor history/excessive points thus allowing fleet managers to take a more informed view as to suitability of employees to drive.
- Driving risk assessments: It is very important to establish whether the driver is competent to drive, this can be achieved by including some form of driver risk assessment in the induction process. This can range from a paper based assessment, a PC based on line assessment through to an in vehicle practical driving assessment - the preferred route for commercial vehicle drivers.
- Driver Training: Whilst there are legal requirements for certain classes of vehicle e.g. Large Goods Vehicles, training for company car and van drivers can dramatically reduce the risk of accidents/crashes.
- Driver Handbook: NU experience confirms that there are many benefits from the issuing of a handbook to drivers, reminding them of matters such as daily/weekly vehicle checks, safe driving practice and the requirement to follow correct procedures for reporting accidents/crashes. Handbooks should also list useful contact telephone numbers.
- Accidents: A requirement for drivers to report accidents permits subsequent investigation, not for the allocation of blame but to learn as much as possible from the experience so that remedial measures may be considered to reduce the likelihood of any recurrence.
The Roadsense site has been designed to provide tools and information for fleet managers. It also provides access and information to other products and services although some are only available to Norwich Union policyholders.
