Turning to pets
Britons who feel depressed are increasingly turning for comfort to their dog rather than a friend or member of the family, a new report has claimed. A survey of 800 people found that a third would turn to their dog if they were feeling down, while just 12 per cent would phone a friend.
Two out of five would seek solace from their partner, but just 6 per cent would ask a member of their family for help and a similar proportion would find comfort by eating food. Phil Loney, Managing Director of Lloyds TSB Insurance, which conducted the survey, said: "Far from being just a cute pet, dogs are frequently replacing friends and family members as an all-important shoulder to cry on. Dogs are now very much one of the family, providing much needed emotional support for stressed out Brits." Two thirds of dog owners said they often talked to their pets.
