Where to live
Location, location, location...
Where you live can make a big difference to how much you pay for your contents insurance or buildings insurance. At Norwich Union, we recognise that it's not always easy to pick where you want to live. Postcode, income, proximity to work, services, transport infrastructure as well as variable property prices and council tax rates often mean that where we end up living is a compromise.
However, we have pulled together some advice worth considering when you're moving house or looking for a new home. If you are able to follow some or all of it, you will help cut your insurance premiums - not just on your home but for your car too!
-
Avoid low-lying flood risk areas if you can.
- Homes in an at-risk area are harder to insure and may carry higher premiums and/or increased excesses for flood claims.
- Visit the Norwich Union Home and Dry site for all you need to know.
-
Research the crime rates in the area where you live.
- While property prices may be lower, areas with a higher crime rate mean a higher insurance premium.
- Urban homes are usually more expensive to insure than those in the suburbs or rural areas.
- Visit the government's crime statistics web site to find out the figures - all you need is your postcode or the postcode of where you intend moving to
-
Find a property with off-street car parking or a garage if you can.
- It will reduce your car insurance premium.
