A stitch in time saves nine...
You're not likely to forget big things like the TV, hi-fi and furniture in your contents insurance. But you'd be surprised how often the little or everyday things are forgotten - and they can soon add up to substantial sums.
Don't find yourself under-insured in the event of a claim. Here are some of the typical items that people can forget to include in a valuation - because they're either tucked away or just so familiar they don't really register.
- Cutlery and crockery: including the wedding set that's still in the loft.
- Glassware: got crystal for special occasions? Keep it that way.
- Kitchenware: expensive and when stored out of sight, can mean out of mind.
- Linen, towels and bedding: easy to miss when they're in the cupboard.
- Mobile phones: handsets are expensive to replace.
- CDs and DVDs: catalogue your collection and itemise it on your policy.
- Curtains and rugs: you see them every day - don't overlook them.
- Children's toys: the bigger your family, the more you'll have.
- Bikes and garden equipment: can amount to thousands of pounds.
- Freezer food: a full chest freezer can contain food worth hundreds of pounds.
- Pet things: leads, baskets, chewy toys - you name it, they all add up.
Include items like these when you're valuing your possessions for your contents insurance and you won't lose out if you suffer an incident like a burglary, flood or house fire.
Remember...
- DO keep a list of your possessions.
- Keep the list safe and add to it as your belongings increase.
- Keep your contents insurance company informed as the value or quantity of your possessions changes over time.
- DO keep receipts for new items you may buy - it's a good habit to develop.
- DO take photographs as helpful proof of ownership if there's no receipt.
