Our answers
1. What is my child covered for if I take out this policy?
We will pay a lump sum if your child should become permanently disabled or die as the result of an accident. There is also a payment if your child needs surgery under general anaesthetic and spends 48 hours or more in hospital as the result of an accident. Disablement, death and hospitalisation due to illness or natural causes are not covered. We also offer help lines for general family welfare and legal advice.
2. How much would my/each child be covered for?
- Accidental Disability: between £5,000 and £100,000 according to the disablement.
- £100,000 for permanent total disablement.
- £50,000 for loss of sight/loss of use of limb.
- £25,000 for loss of hearing in both ears/loss of speech.
- £10,000 for loss of hearing in one ear.
- £5,000 for loss of use of any thumb, finger or toe. When we say 'loss of use of', that includes actual loss by physical severance of a limb/thumb/finger/toe.
- Accidental Death: £2,500.
- Recuperation Benefit (following surgery as the result of accidental injury): £250
3. How much does this cover cost?
£1.99 per month for each child.
4. Can I have more cover than this?
No, this is the only cover level available and there are no plans to change this at present. However, we would notify our policyholders if this position were to change.
5. Would my child/children be covered if ...
- We were abroad? Your children have to be permanent UK residents to be covered on the policy but they are covered abroad provided they are not overseas for more than 12 weeks in any 52 week period. They are not covered if travelling in or through a war zone. In the unlikely event they were flying other than solely as a passenger in a licensed aircraft, they would not be covered either.
- They committed suicide, or tried to commit suicide? No, suicide is not covered. Death, disablement and surgery resulting from attempted suicide or self-inflicted injury are not covered either.
- They were injured in a terrorist attack? Yes, incidents like the London bombings and the September 11th attacks are covered.
- They were attacked by someone? Yes, deliberate injuries caused by a third party are classed as accidental injuries on this policy.
- They had a heart attack? If they simply died from a heart attack then no, they would not be covered as that is death from natural causes and not accidental death. If they had a non-fatal heart attack that caused them to fall from a climbing frame and they died or were disabled by their injuries, then they would be covered.
- Their medical condition caused an accident? Yes. If an epileptic seizure caused them to drown or their diabetes caused them to pass out and fall off a climbing frame, they would still be covered.
6. What would happen to the policy if I died before my children reached the age of 18?
The surviving parent or appointed guardian would be able to take on the policy if they wished.
7. What doesn't the policy cover?
Briefly, the exclusions are:
- flying other than solely as a passenger on a licensed aircraft.
- certain hazardous pursuits - racing by horse, motor or motorcycle and motorcycling as a rider or pillion passenger.
- suicide, attempted suicide or intentional self-injury.
- intoxicating liquor or drugs taken by the insured person.
- pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage or abortion.
- illness and natural causes.
- war or civil uprising (but death, disablement or surgery resulting from terrorism are covered).
- ionising radiation or connected with nuclear explosions or waste.
- committing an illegal act (eg falling off a roof while robbing a house, or a joyrider involved in a fatal car accident).
8. When does the cover commence?
Provided you have given us valid bank details from which we will be able to collect your premiums, your child/children's cover is in force from the next working day, following the submission of your application.
9. How long will the policy run for? Can I cancel the policy?
The policy can run for each child until the end of the month before their 18th birthday, or until they start full time employment if that is earlier. You can cancel it at any time before then by contacting us and cancelling the Direct Debit at your bank.
10. Do I get any money back if I cancel the policy?
If your policy is cancelled within the first 14 days and a premium has been paid, this premium will be refunded to you. If you cancel the policy later on, there is no surrender value and no money is due to you as this insurance is a protection product and not an investment product.
11. When will I receive my free gift(s)?
Your policy documents and gift will be sent to you within 5 working days, after we receive your application.
12. How will I know the help line numbers to call?
These will be printed on your policy document when you receive it.
13. Will I be charged to call the help line numbers?
The advice given on the helpline is free but you will be charged for the cost of the call.
14. Who will get the money if there is a claim?
For children up to the age of 16 the money would be paid to you (or your legal representative). From 16 onwards, the money would be paid to the insured child (or their legal representative).
15. Can the money be paid into a trust?
Please see answer above but if arrangements have been made to pay the proceeds into a trust we will do our best to honour this. Our policy wording states we will not be bound by any trust, charge or transfer. At the time of a claim, we would rely on the advice of our lawyers as to whether we could comply with your wishes.
16. Can I/my partner/wife/husband be covered?
No, not on this policy, but we do have a range of policies for adults - Accidental Death Benefit, Accidental Disability Insurance, Hospital Cash Plan and Family Personal Accident Plan.
17. Can my stepchildren/grandchildren be covered?
Yes, provided you are their legal guardian.
18. I am divorced and my children live with their father/mother. Can I insure them on this policy?
Yes, provided you are their parent or legal guardian.
19. I have a children's personal accident policy with another company. If I take out your policy as well, will both pay out?
At Norwich Union Direct, we will pay out regardless of any similar insurance policies you hold. However, we suggest you also check with your other insurer as their terms and conditions may be different.
20. We spend a lot of time at our holiday home abroad. Can my child/children still be covered?
Cover is provided as long as they are permanently resident in the UK. For this policy we define permanent residency as not being out of the country for more than 12 weeks in any 52 week period. If they are abroad for longer than that, the policy will need to be cancelled but it can be reinstated if they return to live in the UK.
21. Are they covered whilst flying?
Yes, provided they are flying solely as a passenger on a licensed aircraft.
Q22. Will my premiums increase?
Over time, premiums for this sort of policy have been stable and our prices have stayed the same for a number of years. Of course, we cannot guarantee to keep them at this level forever, however if premiums do increase we will advise you in advance and you will have the chance to cancel your policy before any premiums at the increased rate are collected.
23. What about Insurance Premium Tax?
Our premiums include Insurance Premium Tax at the current rate (5%.)
24. I can't pay by Direct Debit. Can I pay another way?
No. Unfortunately, we can only collect premiums for this sort of policy by monthly Direct Debit which is one of the reasons we are able to keep the premiums so low. We cannot accept payment by any other means. We can however accept a Direct Debit from a family member or friend and the policy will still be issued in your name. They need to call us on 0800 051 8998 to set up this Direct Debit. (For our joint protection, calls may be recorded and/or monitored.)
25. Can I pay annually/on a specific date/on a specific day?
No. Unfortunately, we can only collect premiums by Direct Debit on the first working day of each month. This is one of the reasons we are able to keep the premiums so low.
