In the event that you encounter serious problems, you may need some extra help. British consular staff at all overseas embassies can help you - although do be aware that you may be charged for some services.

That's why it makes sense to 'know before you go'. Chances are you won't need them but do take a little time to jot down the key contact numbers before you leave your home - just in case.

Travel Insurance

Your travel insurance company could cover you for a variety of problems - from medical emergency and cancellation through to personal liability, your money and even lost, damaged or stolen baggage.

• DO take your travel insurance policy documents with you to help you know which numbers to call for:
  • Medical emergency.
  • Claims if you're in the UK.
  • Claims if you're abroad.
  • Policy queries or changes.
  • General travel advice and assistance.
  • UK breakdown services.
• DO take a mobile phone with you - and don't forget the charger!
• DO remember to let your family or friends know if you get into difficulty - they may be able to help.
