Travel insurance claims are on the up .

In 2006, Norwich Union paid out nearly £44 million on travel insurance claims. The average size of a claim was £716 - rising by about six per cent a year - and the average travel insurance package costs around £65.*

Let's have a look at the figures more closely:

• Brits made 66 million overseas trips in 2005-06, most of them holidays.*
• The Top Three travel insurance claims were medical emergency (31%), cancellation (25%) and loss/damage/theft of baggage (20%).**
• 25% of people travelled without insurance.**
• 42% of travellers thought loss of belongings or luggage problems would be the biggest reason for a claim.**

Falling ill or having an accident are the biggest reasons for making a claim on your travel insurance and we paid out £23 million to cover our customers' medical costs in 2006.* The moral of the story? We advise you not to chance it - because accidents and problems happen.
