Staying safe and travel advice

Terrorism information

  • Some travel insurers exclude cover for claims due to terrorism - but not at Norwich Union.
  • If you are a victim of terrorism while on holiday, we'll provide you with all the usual policy benefits, including emergency medical assistance and treatment.
  • Remember, our travel insurance doesn't cover you if you cancel your trip because you're worried about terrorism attack
  • Always check the latest FCO advice on travelling to dangerous countries as risks that can be predicted - such as war - are excluded under the 'general exclusions' of your Norwich Union travel insurance policy.

What to do if you need to make a claim

  • Making a claim: please call the claims number as shown in your travel insurance policy booklet documents or helpline card as issued with your policy.
  • Medical emergency: if you need medical treatment contact us as soon as possible on (+44) 1603 208 044 - we can then refer you to a hospital and pay for any treatment you receive directly. If the condition is serious please contact the helpline as soon as possible after you go into hospital.
  • Keep all documents safe. Remember that we will need medical reports, travel tickets and tags, crime reports or death certificates to help us process your claim.
  • DO report lost or stolen baggage within 24 hours and ask for a crime report from the local police to send with your claim. You will also need to provide original receipts or original evidence of ownership.
  • If your luggage is lost by an airline, you must get a property report, give written notice of the claim to the airline within the time limit in their conditions of carriage (keeping a copy for yourself) and keep all travel tickets and tags to claim under your policy.
  • Your claim will be assessed and finalised in accordance with the policy terms and conditions.
  • For more information, please visit our Travel Insurance Claim pages.

Pre-existing medical conditions

  • Honesty is the best policy - please remember to tell us about any pre-existing medical conditions you (or anyone on your trip or upon whom your trip is dependent, e.g. a close relative) might have when you book your holiday insurance. We can then tell you right away if we cover you for claims relating to that condition.
  • We will need to know:
    • If you have any serious, chronic or recurring illnesses.
    • If you are having any medical tests or are waiting for treatment.
    • If your health has changed since you brought or renewed your travel insurance policy.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

  • The EHIC replaces the old E111 form for European healthcare whilst travelling.
  • If you are a UK resident, you are entitled to reduced cost (sometimes free), state-provided medical treatment when visiting a European Union (EU) country as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
  • When travelling to Europe, you should take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you.
  • The EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance - it is complementary to it. The level of state provided emergency medical treatment will vary between countries and may not cover things that are free through the NHS.
  • The EHIC is free and you can apply for one right here through Norwich Union!

Going Down Under?

  • If you need medical treatment in Australia, you must enrol with a local Medicare office.
  • You don't need to enrol on arrival but you must do so after the first occasion you receive treatment.
  • In-patient treatment and out-patient treatment at a public hospital will then be available to you free of charge.
  • Details of how to enrol and the free treatment available are in the 'Health Advice for Travellers' leaflet: you can pick this up from most Post Offices.
