What's covered: your van Comp TPFT
Loss, theft of, or damage to your van included subject to limits and excesses

If your van is lost, stolen or damaged, we will either:

  • pay for your van to be repaired;
  • replace your van or
  • pay the amount of the loss or damage in cash

The same cover applies to:

  • accessories and spare parts
  • fixtures and fittings
  • audio equipment which is away from your van (if it has been designed to be removed entirely or in part from your van and cannot work independently of it, or has been temporarily removed for security or maintenance purposes).

The maximum amount we pay out is the market value of your van at the time of the loss or damage.

If we know that you are still paying for your van under a hire-purchase or leasing agreement, we will make any payment due to the owner described in that agreement.

Any claim you make for loss, theft of, or damage to your van will affect your no claims discount.

New van replacement included subject to limits and excesses

If your new van (under six months old) is stolen or suffers extensive damage, we may replace it with a brand new one to help get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

We will replace your van with a new vehicle of the same make and specification (if one is available) if, within six months of being bought new by you (or your partner):

  • the cost of repairs covered by the policy is more than 60% of your van's United Kingdom list price (including vehicle tax and VAT) at the time you bought it; or
  • your van is stolen and not recovered.

We can only replace your van if:

  • you (or your partner) own the vehicle or you (or your partner) bought it under a hire purchase agreement. We will not replace any vehicle that is subject to a leasing or contract hire agreement
  • any interested hire-purchase company agrees; and
  • you (or your partner) are the first registered keeper of your van.

Any claim you make for a new van replacement will affect your no claims discount.

Tools kept in your van included Not included

We understand that it's not only your van that's important - it's what you carry in it. Under our comprehensive van insurance cover, your personal belongings are covered for theft or damage.

We will repair, replace or compensate you (or the owner) for loss of or damage to tools caused accidentally or by fire or theft while they are inside your van, subject to you making a claim for loss, theft of, or damage to your van. The maximum amount we will pay for any one incident is £500.

Audio equipment in your van included subject to limits and excesses

Your radio or CD player is covered as part of your van's fixtures and fittings (see section on loss, theft of, or damage to your van). In addition, audio equipment is covered when away from your van if:

  • it has been designed to be removed entirely or in part from your van, and
  • it cannot work independently of your van, or
  • it has been temporarily removed for security or maintenance purposes.

Any claim you make for audio equipment in your van will affect your no claims discount.

Fixtures and fittings in your van included subject to limits and excesses

If the fixtures or fittings of your van are damaged, we will either:

  • pay for your van to be repaired, or
  • pay the amount of the loss or damage in cash.

If we know that you are still paying for your van under a hire-purchase or leasing agreement, we will make any payment due to the owner described in that agreement.

Any claim you make for fixtures and fittings in your van will affect your no claims discount.

Glass in your van's windscreen, windows or sunroof included Not included

We will pay for the cost of repairing the glass in your van's windscreen, sunroof or windows, or scratches on the bodywork caused by breaking glass. If you are only claiming for this (and no other loss or damage), you will have to pay the first £60 of the cost of replacing the glass.

This excess cancels out any other voluntary or compulsory excess that would otherwise apply to glass claims.

However, there is no excess payable for glass claims if the glass is repaired rather than replaced.

Any claim you make for replacing glass in your van's windscreen, windows or sunroof will not affect your no claims discount.

Accident recovery included subject to limits and excesses

If you are involved in an accident, call us, and the RAC will arrange the following at no extra cost:

  • Someone to come out and help. If your van cannot be made roadworthy immediately, it will be taken to our nearest approved repairer in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
  • Your van can be taken to a repairer of your choice, if this is nearer, but this may lead to delays in arranging the repairs to it. This rescue service also applies if you have an accident in the Republic of Ireland
  • We can also pass on a message on behalf of any driver

If your van cannot be used due to loss or damage covered by this insurance, we will pay the reasonable cost of its delivery to you at your address anywhere in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands after repair.

Any claim you make for accident recovery will affect your no claims discount.

Emergency medical treatment included included

We will reimburse you, or any person using your van, for emergency medical treatment payments they have to make under the Road Traffic Acts.

Any claim you make for emergency medical treatment will not affect your no claims discount.

Personal belongings kept in your van included Not included

With our comprehensive van insurance cover, your personal belongings are covered against theft or damage caused while they are in or on your van. We will pay you (or the owner) up to of £100 for any one incident for the loss of or damage to personal belongings caused accidentally by fire or theft while they are in or on your van.

Any claim you make for personal belongings kept in your van will affect your no claims discount.

Replacement locks for your van included included

If the keys or lock transmitter of your van are lost or stolen, we will pay the cost of replacing the following:

  • all affected locks
  • the lock transmitter and central locking system
  • any affected parts of the alarm and/or immobiliser

Any claim you make for replacement locks or keys for your van will not affect your no claims discount.

Liability: yourself and third parties driving or using your van included included

Your liability

You are covered against a person's death or injury, or damage to their property (subject to certain limits - see the Norwich Union van insurance policy document for full details) whilst you are:

  • driving your van
  • driving any other van in the British Isles as long as it is specified on your policy

We will also insure the following:

  • Any additional named drivers on your policy
  • Any passenger travelling in, or getting in or out of your van

We also pay any expenses you have had our written permission to claim.

We insure the above people for any compensation, costs and expenses you may have to pay as a result of you being legally liable following:

  • the death or bodily injury to anyone else for an unlimited amount
  • damage to anyone else's property, up to £5,000,000 for all claims arising from any one incident.

Legal costs and legal personal representatives included included

We pay the following legal costs if they relate to an incident which is covered under this section:

  • Solicitors' fees to represent anyone we insure under this section at a coroner's inquest or fatal accident inquiry, or to defend any proceedings in a magistrates' court or any higher court
  • Legal representative's fees to defend anyone we insure under this section when proceedings are taken for manslaughter, dangerous driving or careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs causing death.
  • If anyone who is insured under this section dies, his or her legal personal representative is covered for any liability of that person under this section.
Emergency treatment included included

We refund payments which any person, using any van covered by your policy, has made under the Road Traffic Acts for emergency treatment.

A payment made under this section of the policy will not affect your no-claim discount.

Foreign use (EC compulsory insurance) included included

If you drive your van outside the United Kingdom, your cover automatically meets the minimum legal requirements, usually the equivalent of UK third party only cover.

As well as providing cover within the territorial limits, this policy, in line with European Union directives, also provides the necessary cover to meet the laws on compulsory insurance of motor vehicles in all countries which are members of the European Union.

The level of cover provided is the minimum required to comply with the laws on the compulsory insurance of motor vehicles of the country in which the accident happens. Where the level of cover in any European Union Member State is less than that provided by the legal minimum requirements of Great Britain, the level of cover that applies in Great Britain will apply in that Member State.

Additional cover options
Legal Services

If you select Legal Services cover, Norwich Union will provide up to £50,000 cover for legal costs to pursue a case for the policyholder, any passengers, or any authorised driver, if involved in an accident which was not your fault in the insured vehicle.

We also provide up to £10,000 to defend against any motoring prosecution (excluding dishonesty, violence, drink, drugs or parking-related offences).

Replacement van

If you are unable to use your van following a claim, a replacement vehicle will be provided for your use until your van is recovered, repaired, or written off, up to the maximum period as shown on your schedule. After this period you can continue to rent a replacement van at a preferential rate.

Personal accident cover

Increased protection from Norwich Union, if as the direct result (or within 3 months) of an accident in a vehicle insured under a Norwich Union Direct policy you should:

  • have permanent loss of sight, in one or both eyes
  • lose a limb
  • lose your life as a result of injuries sustained
